If I had to describe life lately in one sentence, it would probably be: I’m making progress, even when it doesn’t feel like it.
Coming home from our family reunion in Utah has been harder than I expected. There’s something about coming back from time with family that makes regular life feel a little heavier. Work has been difficult to get motivated for, and some days I’ve had to argue with myself just to get moving.
But I keep moving anyway.
Lately I’ve been focusing on getting my house back under control. Not with some dramatic weekend makeover, but one corner of one room at a time. That approach has felt a lot more realistic.
I’ve been taking care of the reptiles and dogs, trying to stay on top of everyday chores, and slowly working through years of accumulated clutter.
The biggest project right now is my library.
For over a decade, I’ve held onto boxes filled with paperwork from an old civil court case. I’ve also had several boxes from my grandpa that I wasn’t emotionally ready to open after he passed. They’ve quietly occupied space in my library for a long time, waiting until I was ready.
I’m not sure I’m ready yet.
But I did build new bookshelves. I set up a large table in the middle of the room. Then I gathered every stack of papers and every box that needs to be sorted and placed them on that table.
Have I actually gone through the stacks?
Not yet.
But for the first time, everything is in one place. It isn’t hidden in closets or tucked into random corners anymore. Sometimes progress isn’t finishing the project—sometimes it’s simply preparing yourself to begin.
I’m choosing to count that as a win.
Outside the house, life has been moving too.
I bought groceries, and my ex-husband and I spent some time shopping for school supplies for the kids. Somehow it’s already that time of year again.
He’s also been taking the kids fishing quite a bit lately, and it’s been sweet watching my daughter absolutely fall in love with it. Seeing her find new hobbies and confidence in them has been one of the bright spots of the summer.
At home, I’ve been spending a lot of time helping her with emotional regulation and squeezing in school packets whenever we can before August gets here. I know the transition back to school can be difficult, so we’re trying to ease into routines instead of waiting until the last minute.
My son’s room also got the deep-clean treatment, which felt incredibly satisfying. It’s amazing how much lighter a space can feel after a good reset.
Work has had its ups and downs lately too.
One thing I’ve been especially grateful for is the support from our police department intern. Having another set of hands and someone willing to jump in has made a bigger difference than they probably realize. Even when my motivation hasn’t been where I’d like it to be, I’ve still managed to check several things off my very long to-do list.
That’s something I’m trying to remind myself more often.
Motivation isn’t always what gets things done.
Sometimes consistency does.
Sometimes discipline does.
Sometimes you just do the next thing.
There are also a few really exciting milestones quietly taking shape behind the scenes—personally, professionally, and with my new small business. They’re still in the “not quite ready to announce” stage, but they’re coming together, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.
After the reunion, I’ve found myself missing my grandparents more than usual. Grief has a funny way of showing up when you least expect it. Seeing family, hearing old stories, and remembering the people who should still be sitting around those tables has brought a lot of emotions back to the surface.
I’ve also been thinking a lot about my mom and worrying about how she’s doing. Grief doesn’t disappear just because time passes, and watching someone you love carry that weight is hard.
Somewhere in the middle of all of that, we celebrated America’s 250th birthday on the Fourth of July. It was a fun day with family, fireworks, and the reminder that even during busy seasons, it’s important to stop and celebrate together.
Life lately has been a whirlwind.
Some days I’m overwhelmed.
Some days I’m hopeful.
Most days I’m somewhere in between.
But my kids are healthy. They’re happy. The house is slowly coming together. The library is becoming a space I actually want to spend time in instead of avoid. My list is getting shorter, even if only by a few items each week.
One corner.
One shelf.
One box.
One day at a time.
That’s enough for now.
